About The Museum of Flight

Perched on the historic Boeing airfield where modern aviation was born, The Museum of Flight is one of the world's largest air and space museums, housing over 175 aircraft and spacecraft — and most of them invite you to step right inside. From the cockpit of a Concorde to the legendary Boeing 747 and 787 prototypes, this is an immersive aviation adventure unlike any other.

Local Legends & Stories

The Museum of Flight sits on the exact ground where William Boeing launched his first seaplane in 1916, making it the birthplace of one of the world's largest aerospace companies. Seattle's aviation heritage runs deep, and this museum preserves every engine, wing, and story of the city's pioneering role in flight.

Must Do Experiences

  • Board the British Airways Concorde and sit in the passenger cabin of the supersonic jet that once crossed the Atlantic in under three hours

  • Walk through the first jet-powered Air Force One and imagine the weight of presidential travel

  • Stand inside the prototype Boeing 747 and 787 that launched two generations of commercial air travel

  • Spot the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest and highest-flying manned aircraft ever built

Hidden Gems

  • Don't miss the museum's collection of historic Boeing prototypes hidden in the south hangar, where you can see the aircraft that changed the world

  • The museum's rooftop terrace offers rare up-close views of active Boeing factory operations on a clear day

What Makes it Special

  • One of the few museums in the world where you can actually board and explore the cockpits and cabins of iconic aircraft including a Concorde and Air Force One

  • Built on the original Boeing airfield, giving it an authenticity and historical connection that no other aviation museum can match

  • Over 175 aircraft and spacecraft on display, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive air and space museums globally

  • Check if rooftop access is available for exterior shots of the museum against the Seattle skyline

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

The museum caters to aviation enthusiasts of all ages — don't hesitate to ask staff and volunteers their favourite aircraft, as many are passionate former pilots and engineers Photography is generally encouraged but flash may be restricted in certain galleries, so watch for signage

Overview

Built on the ground where Boeing began, this is one of the largest air and space museums in the world, holding over one hundred and seventy-five aircraft and spacecraft — and most of the important ones can be boarded rather than merely admired.

In the Aviation Pavilion you can walk through the first jet Air Force One, step aboard a British Airways Concorde, and stand inside the prototype 747 and 787 that launched two generations of air travel. A B-17 and a B-29 sit alongside them, and a Lockheed Blackbird crouches nearby looking like something from another century.

Inside, the Great Gallery suspends dozens of aircraft overhead while a Space Shuttle trainer, Apollo-era artefacts and First and Second World War fighters fill the wings. A working air traffic control tower pipes in live radio from the runway outside, where real aircraft take off throughout the day.
