About Potter's Wax Museum

Step into living history at Potter's Wax Museum, America's first wax museum, where over 160 handcrafted figures bring iconic moments and legendary faces to life. Located right by St. Augustine's historic city gate, this family-friendly attraction offers a fascinating glimpse into centuries of culture, from presidents and explorers to Hollywood horror icons.

Local Legends & Stories

Founded in 1949 by Robert E. Potter, this historic attraction has been a St. Augustine landmark for over seven decades. The museum's location near the ancient city gate connects it to the area's rich Spanish colonial history, making it a perfect complement to exploring the Old City.

Must Do Experiences

  • Marvel at the museum's famous self-portrait of founder Robert E. Potter, standing beside his wife Betty. Explore the dedicated horror and film monsters gallery featuring iconic creatures from cinema history. Watch the behind-the-scenes displays that reveal the traditional hand-sculpting and hair-insertion techniques used for over 75 years.

Hidden Gems

  • Look closely at the glass eyes and individually inserted hairs that give each figure its lifelike expression. Discover the small workshop area where visitors can see the sculpting process up close. Find the quiet corner dedicated to St. Augustine's own historic figures and local legends.

What Makes it Special

  • As America's first wax museum, it has been captivating visitors since 1949 with its unchanged traditional craftsmanship. The collection spans presidents, monarchs, scientists, film stars, and religious figures, all sculpted and finished by hand. Overview

America's first wax museum opened in St. Augustine in 1949, and it still occupies its place by the old city gate. More than a hundred and sixty figures fill the galleries, each one sculpted, haired and finished by hand using techniques that have barely changed in a century.

The collection ranges wide — presidents and monarchs, explorers and scientists, religious figures, film stars and musicians — with displays explaining how the figures are made, from the clay head and the glass eyes to the individually inserted hairs.

A separate gallery given over to horror and film monsters is the part most visitors remember, and photographs are encouraged throughout. It takes about an hour, sits directly on the walking route into the old town, and is pleasantly cool on a hot Florida afternoon.
