With spacious reclining seats and direct routes, this limited express train transforms your airport transfer into a seamless and relaxing start to your Japanese adventure.

Local Legends & Stories

The Haruka train's name translates to distant or far away, poetically reflecting its original purpose of connecting the remote, man-made island of Kansai International Airport to the ancient, historic capitals of Kyoto and Nara. Riding this modern marvel feels like a bridge between Japan's futuristic engineering and its deep-rooted cultural heritage.

Must Do Experiences

  • Rotate your 180-degree reclining seats to face your travel companions for a fun, sociable journey right after landing.

  • Enjoy the scenic transition from the coastal airport views to the lush mountains and bustling cityscapes of Kyoto and Osaka.

  • Grab an ekiben (station bento box) at Kansai Airport Station before boarding to enjoy a delicious local meal while speeding towards your destination.

  • Take advantage of the seamless transfer at Tennoji or Osaka stations to connect directly to Nara or Kobe using your bundled ticket.

Hidden Gems

  • The Haruka train often features special seasonal liveries and character collaborations, such as the beloved Hello Kitty Haruka, which offers unique photo opportunities and exclusive merchandise on board.

  • If you are traveling in a group, the 180-degree rotating seats can be turned around to create a private four-seater pod, perfect for chatting and reviewing your itinerary.

  • Keep an eye out for the dedicated luggage storage areas at the ends of the carriages, which are designed specifically to accommodate oversized international suitcases without blocking the aisles.

What Makes it Special

  • It is the undisputed fastest rail connection between Kansai International Airport and major hubs like Kyoto and Shin-Osaka, cutting travel time down to just 75 minutes.

  • The instant digital ticketing system allows you to bypass long ticketing queues at the airport and head straight to the platforms for a stress-free arrival.

  • Flexible routing options let you bundle your airport transfer with onward journeys to Nara or Kobe, eliminating the need to buy separate tickets for complex transfers.

Perfect Timing

When to visit for the best experience

The Haruka runs frequently from early morning until late evening, but catching a mid-morning or early afternoon departure usually means fewer crowds and a more relaxed boarding process. During peak travel seasons like spring cherry blossom or autumn foliage, trains can fill up quickly, so booking your specific time slot in advance is highly recommended to guarantee a seat.

Photography Guide

Capture the perfect shots

  • Capture the iconic exterior of the Hello Kitty Haruka or the sleek standard livery at the Kansai Airport platform before boarding, as the lighting is excellent and the train is stationary.

  • Take photos of the scenic coastal and mountain views through the large cabin windows, but be mindful to turn off your flash to avoid reflecting off the glass and disturbing other passengers.

  • Snap a picture of the digital route map and the 180-degree rotating seats to document the high-tech comfort of Japanese rail travel.

Cultural Etiquette

Respect local customs and traditions

Japanese train etiquette values quietness, so please keep your voice down, put your phone on silent mode, and avoid making phone calls while on board. When using the 180-degree rotating seats, be careful not to kick the seats behind you, and always return them to their original forward-facing position before disembarking.

Special Events & Experiences

Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights

  • During the spring cherry blossom season, the route into Kyoto offers stunning fleeting glimpses of pink blooms along the riverbanks and temple grounds.

  • In winter, the train occasionally features special New Year decorations and collaborations, making the journey into the historic capitals feel festive and culturally immersive.

  • Peak autumn foliage months of November and December provide breathtaking views of the changing leaves as you approach the mountainous regions surrounding Kyoto.

Important Guidelines & Safety

Essential safety information and guidelines

  • Keep your valuables and passports in a small personal bag on your lap or in the overhead rack directly above you, rather than in the distant luggage storage areas.

  • Hold onto the handrails when moving through the carriages, especially when the train is decelerating into major stations like Tennoji or Kyoto.

  • Pay attention to the multi-language digital displays and audio announcements to ensure you do not miss your designated stop or transfer point.

Visitor Information

Entry Fee

Ticket pricing varies depending on your final destination, with bundled options available for onward travel to Nara or Kobe to provide excellent value compared to buying separate fares. Children under six travel for free when not occupying a seat, while discounted child fares apply for ages six to eleven.

Visit Duration

The journey takes approximately 50 minutes to Osaka and 75 minutes to Kyoto, making it a quick and efficient transit experience rather than a full-day activity. Prioritize finding your seat and stowing your luggage immediately upon boarding so you can spend the entire duration relaxing and enjoying the scenery.

Accessibility

The Haruka trains are equipped with dedicated wheelchair spaces and accessible restrooms to accommodate passengers with reduced mobility. Station staff at Kansai Airport and major terminals are readily available to assist with boarding ramps and navigating the platform gaps.

Overview

The JR Haruka Kansai Airport Express is the fastest and most direct rail connection between Kansai International Airport (KIX) and the major cities of the Kansai region — Tennoji, Osaka, Shin-Osaka, and Kyoto — making it a top choice for travelers heading into the city immediately after landing. The limited express train covers the KIX-to-Kyoto route in approximately 75 minutes, with departures roughly every 30 minutes from Kansai Airport Station.

Designed with comfort in mind, the Haruka features reclining, 180-degree rotating seats (allowing groups to face each other or all face the direction of travel), dedicated luggage storage space, and onboard Wi-Fi. Green Class (First Class) carriages are available at the front of the train for travelers seeking extra comfort. Some services run as the specially decorated Hello Kitty Haruka, a popular option among visitors.

For 2026, the ticket is available as a WEST QR E-Ticket, allowing travelers to skip station ticket queues entirely and board using just a QR code on their smartphone, in addition to the traditional physical ticket redeemable at green ticket machines. This discounted one-way ticket is exclusively available to travelers holding a foreign passport with Temporary Visitor status, and cannot be used by Japanese nationals or permanent residents.
