About The Vanilla Village by Kairos
The Vanilla Village by Kairos is Penang's immersive smart vanilla farm where travellers explore aromatic vanilla gardens, learn about sustainable aquaponics, and enjoy hands-on vanilla planting and harvesting experiences — all while sampling exquisite vanilla-infused treats in a serene, eco-conscious setting just outside Georgetown.
Local Legends & Stories
Locally known as 'Kain Putih' (white cloth) in Penang dialect due to vanilla’s pale blooms, the plant has long been used in traditional Nyonya medicine for its calming properties. Legends say Penang’s first vanilla cuttings were smuggled from Madagascar in the 1930s by a Peranakan merchant, who planted them secretly in Ara Kuda.
Must Do Experiences
-
Join the Theatre Experience to witness the captivating story of vanilla unfold through interactive storytelling
-
Participate in a hands-on vanilla planting activity guided by expert horticulturists
-
Experience the Aquaponic Harvesting tour and see fish and plants grow in perfect harmony
-
Indulge in a curated vanilla tasting session featuring ice cream, chocolates, and beverages
Hidden Gems
-
The secret vanilla grove hidden behind the main path — quiet and fragrant, rarely visited by tour groups
-
The underground cellar where vanilla beans age for 14 months in humidity-controlled conditions
-
The live demo of vanilla pollination, a rare skill passed down by local master growers
What Makes it Special
-
It's Malaysia's first and only AI-supported vanilla farm, using smart sensors to monitor soil health and plant growth in real time
-
Vanilla is grown alongside tilapia in a closed-loop aquaponic system, making cultivation both sustainable and educational
-
The on-site heritage variety house displays rare Malaysian vanilla strains developed by local farmers since the 1970s
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Mornings (10am–11:30am) on weekends are ideal when temperatures are cooler and gardens are dew-kissed, amplifying vanilla’s fragrance. The farm operates only on weekends (Sundays included), so weekdays are closed. Peak season runs December–February during cooler northeast monsoon lulls when Penang sees less rain.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture golden-hour shots in the main vanilla pergola between 4:30–5:30pm when light filters through vines softly
-
The aquaponic viewing deck offers a striking contrast of blue fish tanks and lush greenery — best framed with early morning light
-
No flash photography near the vanilla curing area to protect delicate aging beans
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Malaysians appreciate modest attire when visiting rural farms — avoid sleeveless tops or shorts above the knee. Always remove shoes before entering indoor cultural exhibits. Tipping is not expected but appreciated for exceptional guide service.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Vanilla Harvest Festival (every March) featuring live farm-to-table dining and pollination demos
-
Mother’s Day Vanilla Brunch (May) with exclusive tasting menus designed by local Nyonya chefs
-
Limited late-night 'Vanilla Glow' tours during Ramadan bazaars (check website for dates)
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Watch your step on wooden walkways near the water channels — surfaces can be slippery when damp
-
Vanilla plants are non-toxic, but avoid touching your face after handling soil or fish feed without washing hands
-
Stay hydrated — though shaded pathways help, Penang’s humidity can be intense even in air-conditioned greenhouses
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
Standard admission starts at MYR 32.26 per person and includes all guided experiences and tasting. Family packs and senior citizen discounts (age 60+) available at counter — no online booking fee but walk-ins subject to availability
Visit Duration
Full experience takes 90–120 minutes; if short on time, prioritise the Theatre Experience, vanilla planting, and tasting — skip the gift shop rush by pre-ordering souvenirs online
Accessibility
The main garden path and café area are wheelchair-friendly with gentle slopes and ramp access; however, the aquaponic harvesting zone and heritage cellar have narrow entrances and uneven terrain not suitable for wheelchairs
