About Ranau Paragliding and Mt. Kinabalu 1 Day Adventure
Experience the adrenaline rush of paragliding over Sabah's highest peak with a certified coach on this 1-day adventure from Kota Kinabalu. Soar 1,176 metres above sea level with breathtaking views of Mt. Kinabalu, lush rainforests, and Ranau's stunning mountain landscape — all in a safe, guided setting with transfers lunch and entrance fees included.
Local Legends & Stories
Mt. Kinabalu — known as 'Aki Nabalu' to the Kadazan-Dusun — is considered the sacred abode of the spirits of the dead and is surrounded by ancient Taboos. According to legend, anyone who plucked a flower from its summit would be struck by lightning — a belief that helped preserve the mountain’s pristine ecology for centuries.
Must Do Experiences
-
Paraglide tandem-style with a professional coach from Mt. Kinabalu's highlands
-
Take in panoramic views of Mt. Kinabalu, Tambuyukon Range, and Ranau plains from 1,200m above ground
-
Capture the unforgettable 'wow' moment mid-flight as you glide over tropical forest canopy
-
Enjoy a locally-served lunch at a scenic viewpoint after your flight
Hidden Gems
-
The paragliding launch site offers one of the few accessible aerial perspectives of Mt. Kinabalu’s lower slopes without requiring a trek
-
Local guides often share stories about the Kadazan-Dusun people’s historic reverence for the mountain
-
Few visitors notice that the landing zone is nestled in a quiet agricultural valley where you might see local rice paddies and fruit orchards up close
What Makes it Special

It's the only commercially operated paragliding site in Sabah with direct views of Mt. Kinabalu
-
No hiking experience needed — this is a fully guided adventure starting with a 2-hour scenic drive from Kota Kinabalu
-
Professional tandem paragliding coaches provide comprehensive safety briefings and handle all technical aspects while you soak in the views
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
Morning flights (7:00–10:00 AM) offer the most stable winds and clearest visibility — they’re also less crowded than afternoon departures. The dry season from March to September provides optimal flying conditions, while avoiding monsoon season (November–February) reduces the chance of weather delays.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Your coach carries a helmet-mounted GoPro at no extra cost — request it before takeoff for first-person footage
-
Take selfies only after landing; phones are not permitted in flight for safety
-
The landing zone near Ranau Sports Complex offers a beautiful backdrop of rice fields with Mt. Kinabalu in the distance for perfect post-flight shots
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Remove footwear before entering traditional longhouses or temples — while not part of the paragliding activity, you may pass local villages en route to Ranau Ask permission before photographing local residents or sacred sites Tipping is appreciated but not expected — rounding up or a small gesture shows goodwill
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
The annual Masulibau Harvest Festival (July–August) often brings additional local cultural performances near Ranau — inquire if your tour date coincides
-
During December, some operators host holiday-themed sunset paragliding sessions (subject to availability and weather)
-
Peak season runs June–August and during school holidays — book early for preferred morning slots
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Flights are cancelled if wind exceeds 25km/h or rain begins — operators monitor real-time weather closely for guest safety
-
Participants must be physically able to walk 100 metres and stand for 15 minutes without assistance
-
Sun protection is essential — UV levels are significantly higher at elevation even on cloudy days
