About Sicao Green Tunnel

Paddle through Tainan's emerald waterway in the Sicao Green Tunnel, where ancient banyan canopies form a living cathedral over the canal. This eco-adventure pairs a peaceful boat ride with a visit to the Milkfish Theme Museum, celebrating the region's rich aquaculture heritage.

Local Legends & Stories

The tunnel was originally carved in the 17th century as a fishery canal, with legends saying it was blessed by local fishermen for its abundant catches. The banyan trees are said to have been planted by descendants of early Dutch settlers in the 1600s.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Sicao Green Tunnel is located in the Annan District of Tainan and can be reached by taking a taxi, renting a scooter, or using local bus services from the city center. Visitors typically depart from the Sicao Dazhong Temple pier to begin the boat tour through the mangrove waterways.
The experience includes a guided bamboo raft ride through the mangrove forest and the provision of life jackets for all passengers.
The boat ride itself takes approximately 30 minutes from departure to return at the Sicao Dazhong Temple dock.
Passengers travel under a dense canopy of overhanging mangrove branches and can observe local wildlife such as fiddler crabs, mudskippers, and various water birds.
Passengers meet and board the bamboo rafts at the dock situated directly behind the Sicao Dazhong Temple in Annan District.
The gentle, slow-paced raft ride is generally suitable for all ages, though passengers must be able to step down onto a floating, slightly unstable bamboo platform.
The tour is not wheelchair accessible due to the steep, uneven steps leading down to the muddy dock and the lack of ramps onto the floating bamboo rafts.
Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the intense midday heat and to experience the best lighting for photography through the canopy.
Visitors should bring mosquito repellent, sun protection, and a hat, as the mangrove environment attracts insects and offers limited shade while waiting in line.
Operations are temporarily suspended during heavy rain, severe weather warnings, or when tidal conditions make the shallow mangrove channels unnavigable.
The onboard narration and ecological explanations are primarily conducted in Mandarin Chinese, with no standard English audio guides provided.
