Overview

From the village of Engelberg the ascent goes in stages, changing cars at Trübsee and Stand, until you board the Rotair — the first rotating cable car ever built, which turns a full circle as it crosses the glacier so that everyone gets the whole panorama of crevasses, ice fields and surrounding summits.

At 3,020 metres the summit station opens onto terraces looking out over an enormous spread of Alpine peaks. The Glacier Cave runs directly into the ice, a tunnel of blue-white walls at permanently sub-zero temperatures, and the Titlis Cliff Walk — the highest suspension bridge in Europe — spans a gorge beside the station for anyone with the nerve.

The Ice Flyer chairlift then carries you out low over the crevasses to the glacier snow park, where tubing and snow play run through the season. There is snow up here every month of the year.
