Notes
Overview
The tramcar is the largest rotating aerial cabin in the world, and it turns twice during the ascent, so the view moves steadily around you — the walls of Chino Canyon rising close on either side, the desert floor and the whole Coachella Valley falling away below.
The climb covers nearly six thousand vertical feet in about ten minutes, and it passes through several distinct ecological zones on the way. You board among creosote and palms in desert heat and step out at 8,516 feet into pine forest, thirty to forty degrees cooler, with snow on the ground for much of the year.
At the top, Mountain Station has viewing decks, two restaurants, a small natural history museum and the trailheads for more than fifty miles of paths through Mount San Jacinto State Park. Even a short walk from the station puts you in silence among the trees.
