Local Legends & Stories
The Fukuoka subway system runs beneath a city steeped in samurai history and ancient trade routes, with stations like Tenjin named after the revered Shinto deity of learning and culture. Locals often say that riding the subway during the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival season offers a thrilling glimpse into the city's spirited racing floats stored and celebrated near the transit hubs.

Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The subway is most enjoyable to use during mid-morning or early afternoon when you can easily secure a seat and avoid the busy commuter rush hours of 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Spring and autumn offer the best weather for exploring the city above ground, making the subway the perfect cool or warm retreat between outdoor sightseeing stops.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the sleek, modern architecture of Tenjin Station's underground concourse, but be mindful to avoid using flash or blocking pedestrian traffic.
-
The Nanakuma Line trains feature cute, localized interior designs that make for great candid travel photos, best shot during off-peak hours when the cabins are empty.
-
Remember that photography on the platforms is generally permitted for personal use, but always respect the privacy of fellow commuters and avoid filming station staff.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
When riding the Fukuoka subway, it is customary to queue neatly on the marked floor indicators and allow passengers to exit the train before boarding. Keep your voice down and ensure your mobile phone is on silent mode, as talking on the phone or speaking loudly is considered rude in Japanese public transit. Priority seats are reserved for the elderly, pregnant women, and those with disabilities, so be prepared to give up your seat if needed.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
During the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival in July, the subway becomes the primary way to reach Kushida Shrine, with special festive decorations appearing in nearby stations.
-
In December, the subway provides easy, warm access to the stunning Hakata Station Illuminations and the festive Christmas markets scattered around the city center.
-
The Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival in spring makes the subway a convenient escape from the heavy traffic and parking shortages near Maizuru Park.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Always stand behind the yellow tactile paving lines on the platform and wait for the train to come to a complete stop before approaching the doors.
-
Keep your belongings secure and close to your body, especially when navigating busy transfer stations like Hakata and Tenjin during peak hours.
-
If you drop an item on the tracks, never attempt to retrieve it yourself; instead, notify the station staff immediately for safe assistance.
