Local Legends & Stories
The monorail's route passes through areas deeply tied to the Ryukyu Kingdom, with station names and designs often reflecting the region's rich royal heritage and ancient trade routes. Locals affectionately call it the Yui Rail, symbolizing the bond or connection it creates between the people and communities of Naha.
Must Do Experiences

Visit the Tsuboya Pottery Museum near Makishi Station, a lesser-known cultural spot where you can see traditional Okinawan ceramics being made.
-
Look out for the hidden Shisa (lion-dog) statues and subtle Okinawan motifs integrated into the architectural design of various monorail stations.

Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The best time to ride is mid-morning on a weekday to avoid the local commuter rush and secure a window seat for the best views. While the monorail is excellent year-round, riding during the cooler, drier months from October to April offers the most comfortable sightseeing weather when you step off at your destinations.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Sit in the very first or last seat of the train to capture dramatic, vanishing-point perspective shots of the tracks curving through the city.
-
Golden hour just before sunset provides stunning warm lighting for photographing the cityscape through the large carriage windows.
-
Avoid using flash photography inside the train, as it can cause glare on the windows and disturb fellow passengers.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Japanese transit etiquette is highly valued, so please keep your voice down, set your phone to silent mode, and avoid taking phone calls while on board. Always queue neatly behind the marked lines on the platform and allow passengers to exit the carriage before you step inside.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
During the Naha Hari Dragon Boat Races in early May, the monorail is the best way to bypass heavy road traffic heading to the Naha Port event area.
-
In December, the Kokusai-dori area accessible via the monorail lights up with spectacular illuminations and festive markets for the holiday season.
-
The pass is especially popular during the Naha Great Tug-of-War in October, allowing easy access to the massive festival grounds near the route.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Mind the gap between the train and the platform when boarding and alighting, especially when traveling with strollers or luggage.
-
Hold onto the handrails while the monorail is in motion, as the elevated tracks can cause noticeable swaying around sharp curves.
-
Keep a close eye on your personal belongings and bags, particularly during busy commuter hours when the carriages are crowded.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
This 1-day pass offers a flat rate for unlimited rides, providing significant savings compared to buying individual tickets for multiple stops. Child passes are available at a discounted rate, making it a highly economical choice for families exploring Naha.
Visit Duration
The full end-to-end ride takes about 30 minutes, but you should allocate a full day to hop on and off at major sights like Shuri Castle and Kokusai Street. If you are short on time, prioritize the stretch between Naha Airport and Kokusai-dori Station for the most concentrated shopping and dining experiences.
Accessibility
The Okinawa Urban Monorail is fully accessible, featuring step-free access via elevators at all stations, tactile paving for the visually impaired, and designated priority seating inside the carriages. Wheelchair users can easily board using the multi-purpose spaces available in the first and last cars of each train.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Okinawa Urban Monorail (1-day pass)
• Shurijo Castle symbolizes the history and culture of Okinawa.
• Shurijo Castle's history is that of the Ryukyu Kingdom itself.
• One of the UNESCO World Heritage.
Located in Naha, Okinawa, Shurijo Castle was once the site of the capital and palace of the Ryukyuan Kingdom. In those days, the king of Ryukyu was known to handle state affairs, receive envoys, or hold important ceremonies here, and it has now been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. According to historical records, Shurijo Castle was burned down and reconstructed several times, with today's castle a replica of the Chinese Tang dynasty style architecture that remained from the Second World War. The Ryukyu-style castle combines the architectural features of China, Japan and Okinawa. One of the most iconic buildings is the Chinese-style Shureimon Gate, the plaque on which is inscribed with "Nation of Propriety", which was given by the Chinese Emperor when conferring titles to the Ryukyu King.

△ The Shureimon Gate was based on the Chinese roofed “turret” gate style called paifang, with a lower red-tiled roof spanning the full width of the gate surmounted by a higher roof in the center.

△ Kankaimon is the first gate that leads to the inner castle walls of Shurijo, and the name Kankai means “to welcome”.

△ The Seide before it was destroyed by fire
