About Tokyo Wide Pass 3 Days
Unlock the ultimate freedom to explore Tokyo and its breathtaking surrounding regions with the 3-Day Tokyo Wide Pass. This exclusive pass offers unlimited travel on JR East local, rapid, express, and select Shinkansen trains, making it perfect for adventurous travellers wanting to venture beyond the city limits to snowy mountains, hot springs, and coastal gems.
Local Legends & Stories
The railway networks covered by this pass trace the historic Nakasendo and Tokaido routes, once walked by samurai and merchants connecting Edo to the rest of Japan. Riding these modern steel lines echoes the centuries-old tradition of Japanese travel and pilgrimage to sacred mountains and healing hot springs.
Must Do Experiences
-
Ride the Joetsu Shinkansen to Gala Yuzawa for a quick snow resort getaway or autumn foliage viewing.
-
Take the limited express trains to the stunning Fuji Five Lakes area and Nikko's historic shrines.
-
Hop on the Izu Kyuko Line to enjoy the beautiful coastal views of the Izu Peninsula.
-
Explore the charming castle town of Kawagoe or the hot spring resorts of Kusatsu using the included local and rapid train networks.
Hidden Gems
-
Use the pass to reach the lesser-known Oze National Park via the Joetsu Line for pristine marshland trekking away from the crowds.
-
Visit the tranquil shores of Lake Kawaguchi using the Fujikyuko Line connection to see Mount Fuji reflected perfectly in the water.
-
Discover the retro Showa-era atmosphere of Kiryu in Gunma Prefecture, easily accessible via the Ryomo Line.
What Makes it Special
-
Exclusive to non-Japanese passport holders, offering incredible value for international tourists exploring the wider Kanto region.
-
Covers premium limited express trains and select Shinkansen routes that usually require expensive supplementary tickets.
-
Provides the flexibility to spontaneously change your itinerary and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations across multiple prefectures.
Available Facilities
Perfect Timing
When to visit for the best experience
The pass is phenomenal during the autumn foliage season from late October to November or the cherry blossom season in early April when the wider Kanto region bursts into color. Early morning departures are best for securing non-reserved seats on popular limited express trains heading to Nikko or Izu, while avoiding the heavy weekday commuter rush in central Tokyo.
Photography Guide
Capture the perfect shots
-
Capture the iconic view of Mount Fuji from the windows of the Fujikyuko Line or the Tokaido Line during the crisp, clear mornings of winter.
-
Photograph the retro charm of the steam locomotives and historic stations in Gunma and Nagano, but always avoid using flash near the tracks or inside the train cabins.
-
Use a polarizing filter when shooting out of the train window to reduce glare and capture the vibrant landscapes of the Japanese countryside.
Cultural Etiquette
Respect local customs and traditions
Maintain a quiet atmosphere while on board Japanese trains by keeping your phone on silent mode and avoiding loud conversations. It is considered polite to refrain from eating or drinking on local and rapid commuter trains, though consuming a bento box on long-distance Shinkansen or limited express trains is perfectly acceptable and part of the travel culture.
Special Events & Experiences
Enhanced experiences and seasonal highlights
-
Winter illuminations and snow festivals in Gala Yuzawa and Nagano from December to February offer magical day-trip opportunities from Tokyo.
-
The vibrant autumn foliage light-ups in Nikko and the Fuji Five Lakes region peak between late October and late November.
-
Spring brings the famous cherry blossom festivals along the Sumida River and in the castle towns of Kawagoe and Mito from late March to mid-April.
Important Guidelines & Safety
Essential safety information and guidelines
-
Always stand behind the yellow tactile paving lines on the platform and wait for passengers to disembark before boarding the train.
-
Keep your valuables and passport secure in a cross-body bag or front pocket, especially when navigating crowded transfer hubs like Tokyo or Shinjuku stations.
-
Pay attention to the digital display boards and audio announcements, which are available in English, to ensure you do not miss your stop or accidentally board a train requiring a supplementary fee.
Visitor Information
Entry Fee
The Tokyo Wide Pass offers a flat-rate pricing structure with distinct tiers for adults and children aged 6 to 11, while children under 6 travel for free when accompanied by a pass holder. This pass represents massive savings compared to buying individual point-to-point Shinkansen and limited express tickets for multi-day regional exploration.
Visit Duration
The pass is valid for three consecutive days, which is the perfect duration to combine deep exploration of Tokyo with two full-day excursions to destinations like Nikko, Karuizawa, or the Izu Peninsula. If short on time, prioritize one major Shinkansen day-trip to the mountains or coast and use the remaining days for unlimited local travel within the greater Tokyo metropolitan area.
Accessibility
Most JR East stations and trains covered by the pass are fully wheelchair accessible, featuring tactile paving, elevators, and dedicated priority seating. Station staff are readily available to assist with deploying ramp boards for wheelchair users boarding and alighting from trains.
